Quite often, the architecture of schools focuses on built forms that house internal teaching spaces. We think of classrooms as boxes for teaching - allocated and programmed cubes for delivering curriculum. What about the void that exists between these objects?
Some environments are conducive to spending time outside. South East Queensland is one such location. Our projects often search for the spaces between buildings as golden opportunities to create pockets of space to occupy, teach, present and socialize.
The resent S Block project used concealed lighting elements under translucent sheeting from Palram as a large diffuser to spread soft light over an external terrace. Mark Milligan from Ashburner Francis understood the brief and worked together with the architect to achieve a space suited to many functions.
This space exists between two large covered areas. We look forward to seeing the creative and organic ways students occupy this terrace.
